Update on the Panama Canal situation
Just got into summer season and rainy season never showed up at all, for this reason our authorities at this moment are allowing the transit of 22 vessels per day instead of the regular 36 transits per day.
They can wait in line for days or weeks, as low water levels limit the number of ships passing through the 50-mile waterway. They can pay millions of dollars to jump ahead in the queue, if a ship with a booked reservation drops out. Or they can sail an entire continent out of the way, sending their ships around the southern tips of Africa and South America, or through the busy Suez Canal.
Shipping companies are trying to pass along the extra costs to their customers. Hapag-Lloyd AG, and Maersk all have announced new Panama-related surcharges in recent months

Change in booking procedure for Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS-related) goods between GB and NL
Starting from December 1st 2023, the Dutch NVWA will make mandatory the process that was introduced last year for shipments entering the EU via a ferry terminal with animal origin goods.
This new process makes it possible to arrange all applicable administration prior to shipment from GB so that the goods can immediately leave the terminal upon arrival in the Netherlands.
European law places a legal obligation on the importer to make a formal declaration notifying the authortities (NVWA) of the pending importation of SPS goods before they enter EU territory. By making this declaration to the NVWA the customer obtains a GGB number which needs to be shared with us at the booking stage.
Instability in the Guarulhos Airport system (Brazil)
We would like to inform you that due to the instability of the CCT system, the flow of cargo release and delivery has been affected, causing a congestion of cargo at the GRU airport warehouse. As a result, the cargo release process and storage will take longer. The most significant impact will be experienced during the removal of loads from the automated warehouse.
Panama
Panama is currently facing a severe drought, exacerbated by a strong El Niño weather system, leading to a significant reduction in daily transit at the Panama Canal. This has resulted in substantial delays across various vessel categories, with the situation expected to worsen in the coming months. The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has halted the prebooking of transit passages, causing uncertainty in vessel transit schedules. Due to the late arrival of the rainy season and insufficient precipitation in the Canal watershed, transit capacity has been drastically reduced to 40%-50% of full capacity.
Recent weeks have seen no improvement, and the ACP has implemented additional vessel transit reductions to conserve water in the locks, leading to heavy congestion. Waiting times for transit are now expected to be around 16 days for both northbound (NB) and southbound (SB) vessels. The unusual situation has prompted the ACP to take measures to mitigate the impact.
In the last days it did happen that carriers decided to sail via Cape Horn.

The water level continues to rise – Rhine closed to shipping. The Rhine near Basel reached the high-water mark on Tuesday evening due to the persistent rainfall. Navigation was therefore initially closed upstream on the Rhine. In the night to Wednesday, the water level increased again to 8.71 metres. From a level of 8.20 metres, all shipping between Rheinfelden and the Kembs lock (F) is closed. Forecasts predict a further rise in the high-water level
The cargo ship “La Primavera” caused millions of euros worth of damage on Saturday afternoon when it collided with the lock gate on the Rhine at Iffezheim and destroyed it. The repairs are expected to take several months. Navigation on the Rhine will continue with reduced capacity through a second lock chamber until the repairs are completed. The waterway police have pointed out that delays can occur at times of high demand, leading to backlogs.

DE truck toll: Important changes from December 2023
The German government is planning major changes to the truck toll from 1 December 2023. Specifically, an adjustment of the CO2 component is planned, which could lead to a doubling of costs from 1 December 2023. But that is not all.

Increase in Swiss VAT rates
As a result of the vote on 25.09.2022, the Swiss standard VAT rate will be raised from the current 7.7% to a new 8.1% – the reduced rate will increase from the current 2.5% to a new 2.6%.
