Abolition of industrial tariffs

As already mentioned several times in the media, the abolition of customs duties for industrial products will now come into force on 01.01.2024. In Switzerland, industrial products are all goods with the exception of agricultural products (incl. processed agricultural products and animal feed) and fishery products. The abolition of industrial tariffs thus covers goods in chapters 25-97 of the Swiss customs tariff, with the exception of some products in chapters 35 and 38, which are classified under agricultural products. Our tip: Continue to request valid preferential documents from your suppliers. Unless it is already clear at the time of import clearance that the goods will remain in Switzerland.

Warning strike at major German ports might affect operational flow on June 9, 2022

Here’s an update for German ports.

The Verdi union has announced a warning strike for today’s late shift at some major German ports, including the Port of Hamburg. With this warning strike, it is expected that all container terminals at the port of Hamburg stop working for some hours.  With your cargo planning in mind, we would like to highlight a few possible scenarios:

  • We assume that the operational processes will be strongly affected this afternoon.
  • Truck deliveries might only be possible to a very limited extent, if at all.
  • There might be an impact on the traffic situation around the port.

Unfortunately, we have no influence over this situation and ask for your understanding. Please know that we will keep you informed about further developments.

Lines start to omit calls to Shanghai, the world’s largest container port

Looking on horrified at millions of hungry, irate Shanghainese, citizens in many other cities across China have started to hoard food in preparation for any impending Covid-19 lockdown. China’s heavy-handed municipal lockdowns have attracted sharp criticism. Authorities have relented a little in Shanghai, the country’s largest city, where lockdown entered its third week today. However, down south mass testing is underway at another important port city, Guangzhou. In Shanghai, the city has classed residential units into three risk categories, to allow those in areas without positive cases for a stretch of two weeks to engage in “appropriate activity” in their neighbourhoods. Rising fuel costs

Because of an imminent import ban on Russian oil, the price of petrol breaks the 2 franc limit. However, a liter of petrol could soon cost more than three francs. In the short term, however, there is no alternative to Russian oil, says an expert. The war in Ukraine is causing energy prices on the stock exchanges to rise dramatically.

Russian Railways on the sanction list of EU and US

Both the EU and the US have included Russian Railways in their sanction list. It is not completely clear what this means for rail freight transactions between Europe and China, but it seems that doing business with the Russian state-owned company could become more complicated.
